Many more daily swims in Chesterbrook on sunny summer daysβ¦.

Gracie and I have fallen into a routine during these blazing-hot summer days. Typically, we’ll have a long outing mid-day to the swimming hole in Chesterbrook. Gracie LOVES the swimming hole. While there, I stand at the edge of the creek and toss her favorite orange ball into the water. She swims to retrieve it, carries it back, drops it near me, and wades into the water to wait for the next toss. Then we repeat it 30 or 40 more times.
She recently developed a new aquatic activity: she dives for rocks. I’ll toss a rock into the stream, Gracie will plunge in after it, dive under the surface (she resembles a duck with her head underwater and her behind in the air), grab a rock (any rock she finds – rarely the one I tossed), carries it to shore, and carefully searches for a spot where she deems as the ideal location to set it down.
If I didn’t get tired, she’d probably be happy retrieving her favorite ball and diving for rocks all day long.

It doesn’t get much better than this for a Goldendoodle! Gracie enjoying quality time with belly rubs from Aunt Tina…

Several readers of my blog have asked me about the less frequent Gracie updates over the past several months. Well, the truth is, there have generally been fewer unexpected things to write about. When Gracie was a puppy, remarkable incidents were happening all of the time – weekly, daily, and even hourly! But now, notable happenings tend to be rarer.
But yesterday, we did get a surprise. Gracie was selected by the staff as the “DOG OF THE WEEK” at Lucie’s Barkingham Palace! For this grand distinction, my loveable noodle got her name emblazoned on a sign in Lucie’s lobby and had pictures taken for posting on Facebook. I’m such a proud parent!
Click here to see the Facebook post where it says: “This super sweet doodle, Gracie, is a frequent flier here at Lucieβs! Sheβs always so excited coming through the doors, and loves to see all of her four-legged and two-legged pals! She was ecstatic to learn that sheβs this weekβs Dog of the Week!!”

Gracie and I took a trip last weekend to Delaware for the annual Doodles in Dewey event. I had heard about this event from someone last year, so I decided to try it out this year. It’s sponsored by Paws for People and held during the last weekend in April with fun dog activities just for doodles*. I booked a pet-friendly hotel near the beach and we hit the road!
On Friday night we arrived in time for the dog costume parade where dozens of doodles donned in varied, colorful costumes, strutted up and down the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk with their owners. Gracie didn’t participate in the parade but enjoyed it as a spectator. On Saturday, we went to the main event – a doodle doggie romp on Dewey Beach. The weather was cool and cloudy, but it didn’t dampen the excitement for the dog owners and the hundreds of doodles playing on the beach. I let Gracie off-leash and she had a blast. She romped with other dogs, chased tennis balls, played in the water, strolled along the beach, rolled in the sand, dug holes, sniffed out horseshoe crabs, discovered seashells, and received countless belly rubs. She didn’t want to leave.
Lots of pictures from the weekend are below.
*Some clarification, in case you are wondering about what defines a “doodle.” You can take any other breed of dog and cross it with a poodle, and – BINGO – you have a DOODLE. Most of the time you can figure out the combination of the doodle by the crossbreed name. A few examples: Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Aussiedoodle, Cockapoo, Bernedoodle, Huskypoo, Schnoodle, Sheepadoodle, Saint Berdoodle, Corgipoo, Pugapoo, Dalmadoodleβ¦the list goes on.

Early this morning I took Gracie out, fed her, and then I decided to go back to bed for a bit. I settled under the covers and it started to rain. As I began to drop off to sleep, I listened to the soothing sounds through the open window as the drops splashed onto the surfaces outside.
I woke up about two hours later. Gracie was sleeping soundly at the bottom of the bed. I got up and wandered to the kitchen. As I stepped through the hallway I saw a ripped-up plastic sandwich bag and foil fragments covering the carpet.
Apparently, what I “thought” were the “soothing sounds of the rain splashing” were, in fact, Gracie shredding the bags of doggie treats I had placed on the counter yesterday. While I slept, Gracie had pulled the treats off of the counter and then ate an entire bag of dog kibble (hence the foil fragments), two dog cookies (the ripped plastic bag), and a braided chew stick.
Bad doggie.

Today has been a cold, rainy, wet, miserable day so there wasn’t much of anything to do except rip a tire off of a Subaru. (A toy Subaru, that is.)

This week brought the first significant snow accumulation we’ve seen in this area for several years. Today’s soft flakes fell throughout the day, coating the ground with a thick, soft blanket of white.
It’s a rare thing for me to spend hours outside in subfreezing, snowy weather. What it takes for me is a dog that loves the snow. (And two layers of long underwear, jeans, two fleece jackets, a heavy coat with a hood. 3 layers of socks, winter boots, thick gloves, a warm hat, and a wool scarf.)
The snow was calling for Gracie.
So, in the afternoon, Gracie and I walked to nearby Wilson Farm Park. I typically keep her on a leash in the park (it’s a rule), but with the exception of one wacky guy out there running in shorts, we saw no other people and no other dogs. So, I let Gracie off her leash. From the moment I released her, she sprinted – to romp, race, poke, dig, sniff, and roll in the snow. We trekked all through the park, forming fresh tracks everywhere we went. Gracie was exhilarated.
By the time we arrived back home, Gracie had thick clumps of ice caked on her paws, all four of her legs. her snout, and her belly. (I used warm water to remove all of the ice.)
The noodle has a new nickname now when we’re on these jaunts: Icicle-face.

Earlier this week a huge storm brought a deluge of rain and wind to our area, causing lots of local flooding and power outages. Gracie and I weathered the storm. She spent most of the day in daycare. I was lucky to not lose power.
In the aftermath of the event, the strong winds and supersaturated ground left countless toppled trees and downed branches in its wake. Now, everywhere we go, Gracie finds a massive oversupply of STICKS. For her, that’s been like Christmas all over again.

I’m impressed with the Barking Bard Chatbot’s poem of Gracie’s New Year’s resolutions. But I think the fourth verse needs an even more personalized touch. So, I’m updating it with my own spin:
Verse 4 update:
Iβll keep my bodily functions under control,
No more passing gas, like a silent troll,
I can be much better, as you well know,
And leave all the farting to Mr. Hippo!

Since Gracie can’t actually write (at least not yet), I wanted to see how AI would craft some suitable New Year’s resolutions for her. And I thought it would be entertaining to have the prose generated in poem form. After a tiny bit of my guidance, a few AI reiterations, and my minor tweak here and there, here’s the resultant sonnet!
A Tail of New Beginnings: Gracie’s 2024 Resolutions
by the Barking Bard AI Chatbot for Gracie W.
A New Year’s here, it’s time to shine,
I’ll make some resolutions, and I’ll do them just fine,
No more naughty deeds, I’ll show restraint,
And with each verse, a new change I’ll paint!
No more couch-chewing, I’ll keep my jaws free,
No more holes, no more foam-filled glee,
I’ll find new ways to spend my days,
And leave the furniture in better ways!
I’ll stop jumping on guests who visit our home,
No more doggy pounces, no more guilt to own,
I’ll wag my tail with friendly grace,
And show them I’m a good girl in this place!
In 2024, I’ll be a better pup,
No more sneaky napkin theft, I’ll give it up.
No more stealing, that’s my vow,
I’ll find some toys to chew on now.
Counter surfing, I’ll resist the urge,
No more snatching, no more splurge.
My paws will stay where they should,
And my behavior, forever good.
I’ll keep my bodily functions under control,
No more passing gas, like a silent troll,
I’ll be a better friend to all around,
No more stinky surprises, only tail wags abound!
So here’s to the New Year, let’s make it great,
With my resolutions, I won’t hesitate,
I’ll try to be a better doggy, you’ll see,
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll forgive me.
πΎπ Happy New Year! ππΎ
